Links to Existing Music Tutorials and Resources
I'll be creating and monitoring this list. I'm a Mod on the Songbook of Laurelin where I will be compiling links to specific tutorials in that forum, but also looking to add other tutorials to this thread. The First post of this thread will be updated as needed to add or correct links. I encourage any of you who know of other tutorials on ABC notation, music sources, etc. to add replies here.
I'm not quite ready to add all the links, but when I have them I'll update this post.
Tutorials:
- Songbook of Laurelin ~ registration is required if you want to post to the forums or to join one of the societies. Otherwise you can read information and even download files without registration.
- Lorebook: Meriband's Music Maestro Manual
- Official LOTRO Forums: Music System
- The Fat Lute
- ABC Tutorial Page Figgy's basic tutorials will provide any beginner with a great start, though no visual aides.
Programs:
- Anvil Studio: a free program which will open midi files to edit them, or to create your own midi files. Free version cannot insert "events" such as changes in meter or volume within the song. But this program is the easiest way to tinker with transposing and octaves in order to make a midi fit within the limited range of LOTRO ABC.
- Craigin's Note Replacer for Drums. I had to upload a zip file with the (very small) program in it because the original site that carried it seems to be offline. Then use this LOTRO Drum Note Descriptions,a Google spreadsheet with links to sound files on YouTube for each drum note. These tools are handy for picking out your own replacements for standard drum sets found in many midis.
- LOTRO Midi Player This is an invaluable (yet FREE) little program to convert a midi into an ABC file, or individual tracks of a midi into parts of a song, or even to combine more than one track into a single part within a song.
- MuseScore is a great, completely free, new program I've found for transcribing sheet music, then converting it into a midi file (which can then be brought into Anvil Studio for easy transposing). It can also open a midi file and display it as sheet music. This program makes editing so easy, and you can add those "events" that free-Anvil prohibits!

Another thread with specific links to publicly accessible libraries of ABC files is in order, I think, and also to good sources of .mid files for transcribers. I'd like this forum to become a clearing house of resources for Second Breakfast Band.

I hit a snag or two setting up Songbook tonight, and I found this page to be a help: http://lotroplayers.com/2015/10/19/step-by-step-songbook-plugin/

This helped me fix the problem I had, just by being there. I had read through pages of info on various forums. I knew I had done everything correctly, but still couldn't get it to show up in LOTRO. Then it hit me almost immediately after that link loaded. The folder I had inside my LOTRO folder was somehow named "Plugin Data", and it should have been "Plugins". I just changed the folder name and now I'm a happy little elf. :)
Actually, "Plugin Data" is a folder that LOTRO makes when it's installed. Really, y' ought t' CREATE a new folder, an name it "Plugins", an install Songbook in there. I dunno what would happen if y' re-name yer Plugin Data Folder t' just Plugins. If it's workin all right fer ye, that's fine, but if at some point y' want t' install some OTHER Plugin, it may cause difficulties...
Might be best if y' create a new folder now, an name it "Plugin Data", so ye'll have such a folder fer future plugins t' use. I'm just sort o' supposing here, but it seems t' me t' be th' simplest, safest thing t' do
Thanks! :) *thumbsup*
You MUST keep both Plugins and Plugin Data folders. The plugins--all of them--go in the Plugins folder and the data, such as Songbook settings, Lyrical files, Poetical, etc. for each of your accounts goes into Plugin Data.
Be sure to keep backup text files of all the stuff you have in Lyrical or Poetical in case one of them crashes. You can use the AllServers folder if want to easily copy them to a character on an alt account. Just be careful as you copy the data from one to another.
By the way, back in the day when I started out, it took me 2-3 nights to figure out why Songbook wouldn't work until I finally noticed the missing Plugins folder. Kinda hard to notice something that's not there!
Do drop in. The doors are always open!

Breakfast: the best meals of the day.
It looks like no one has posted on this thread in about four and a half years. But, I would like to try and restart the discussion. I have mostly completed a music system tutorial for the current Songbook plugin. What makes mine a little different than the others is that I reference specific websites and steps for Breakfast Club music. I also have some trouble shooting built-in to the guide. I would like some people to check my draft... any volunteers? Thanks!
