re: Longtime Solo

I've been soloing since I started, and after a character bowed to me this afternoon (I saw he was about to die and reflexively killed the monster attacking him) I realized I'm woefully undersocialized...I didn't know how to do emotes to return his bow! I can read the wiki as well as anyone, but I think I'm ready to nest in the game. I got myself a house, and have been looking at kinships - yours stood out as an Arts-heavy one. Please advise me, what should I look for besides emotes? I see I should find out about an instrument to play...give an old gal a hand here? :)

Thanks in advance,

Although I can't help you much in those areas (I'm woefully unequipped with music since the Songbook apparently hates me), I do know that you've come to the right place to ask. Happy

re: Longtime Solo

I think a good place to start would be to apply to a good kinship such as Second Breakfast! There's no need for you to be running around a lovely place like Middle Earth all by yourself. Ans we have an awesome band that gathers for music and socializing every week, so if you've got a player on Crickhollow do, at least, join us for some of those activities. If you're not on Crickhollow yet, give it a try--it's a warm and friendly server.

re: Longtime Solo

Hoi, Amabelwyn!

Well, lessee... Not quite certain if'n yer comment 'bout readin th' Wiki means y' DID learn all there was t' know 'bout emotes, so startin there, lemme just point out that not only can y' access emotes from th' button at th' left edge o' th' chat entry window, but if there's emotes y' think ye'd like t' have handy, y' can cue 'em up in a couple o' different ways. Most commonly, folks'll use a quickslot,, which y' can produce by typin in [ /shortcut number /emote ] (without th' brackets) where number is th' number of a unused quickslot (They're numbered 1-12 on th' bottom row, then 13-24 on th' second one up, 25-36 on th' next row, etc.) an /emote is whatever action ye'd like t' do, such as [ /bow ]. This'll create a black button with th' name o' th' emote on it (or at least, th' first  few letters o' th' name) which y' can then click t' do th' emote.

Th' other possibility, if y' don't want t' use up quickslots, is t' use a alias. Aliases are real handy fer a lot o' things, th' only drawback bein that y' have t' be able t' recall what th' alias is... Y' build a alias by typin in [ /alias ;xxx /bow ] where xxx is any set o' any keys ye'd like—fer bowin, y' might just use "b". Then, t' use th' alias, y' type in [ ;b ] an that causes ye t' bow.

Th' important thing t' note is that th' semi-colon key is th' alias key. All aliases b'gin with ";"

Y' can also say things in th' alias, such as [ /alias ;ow Ow, that really hurt! ]. Then typin in ";ow" an hittin enter will cause ye t' say "Ow, that really hurt!" in th' /say (local) channel.

There's more involved ways t' use these things, but I'll leave ye t' google 'em on yer own when ye've got comfortable with 'em.

If yer interested in roleplay, y' can let folks know this by typin in [ /rp on ]. This'll change th' color o' yer name above yer head t' white. [ /rp off ] reverts it back t' th' standard yellow.

Y' can also add yer own descriptive text t' emotes, or just describe whatever yer doin. With a reglar emote, when y' [ /bow ], other people's chat  windows show emote text sayin "Amabelwyn bows". But if y' type in [ /bow bows to the stranger she just rescued ] then th' chat window will show, "Amabelwyn bows to the stranger she just rescued". If y' want t' describe something that's NOT a reg'lar emote, use [ /e ], as in [ /e looks under the table for the ring he just dropped ]. This will display "Amabelwyn looks under the table for the ring he just dropped"

Remember that the chat window will show your name  first, so start typing your action with an uncapitalised verb.

Once y' start takin part in fellowships, or join a Kinship, y' can switch chat channels by typin in [ /f ] and hittin th' SPACE BAR t' enter Fellowship chat. Similarly, [ /k ] takes y' into Kinship chat, [ /ra ] is fer Raid chat, [ /say ] takes y' into local chat. [ /t charactername ] sends a private message (also called a "tell", hence th' "t") t' th' character named.

It's also helpful t' give different chat channels different colored text. Y' can do this by R-clickin th' General chat tab, an then selectin Change Text Color (that might not be th' exact wordin, but ye'll see it easily enough >.^ )

That ought to be enough t' get ye rollin fer a little ways, at least. Let us know if y' have any other questions!

Oh! One other thing y' may find useful is th' two letters "wc". In many places this stands fer "water closet" (i.e., bathroom) but fer gamers, it means "wrong chat". Once y' start hoppin  from one chat channel t' another, ye'll find yerself needin it on a reg'lar (tho hopefully infrequent) basis. Leastways, I know I do

re: Longtime Solo

Daffin covered all of that better than I ever could, and Bibliocat certainly offered some great advice.

I'd also recommend coming out for Bread & Jam at the Prancing Pony some Friday night (8pm EDT/server time).  It's a great time to enjoy music, light RP, and learn how to play an instrument yourself.  You're also very welcome to join us at Elevenses in Michel Delving's Bird & Baby Inn, every Sunday at 11am and Monday at 11pm.  We also expand Lotro beyond just the normal game play by holding various events, such as the Mid-year's Day Festival on June 22nd.  Our members participate in all the other usual facets of the game, too, but Second Breakfast is known for those special events.

It's good to have some company while you're on an adventure.  For various reasons, I solo about 99% of the time.  But I love having people to talk with in kin chat as I go along.  Sometimes I'll completely forget about my quests while I just chatter away for an hour.  Having a good kinship changes the game entirely.  Whether you end up here or somewhere else, I hope you find the right home.

re: Longtime Solo

Thank you so much! I'll definitely try and check in for your group meetings, I'm so curious to see how bands work. It just never occurred to me to try and network in-game, occasionally I'm asked to join a fellowship, but I'm not good with them because I just don't have the experience, although I'm up there in stats; it's frustrating for other players who expect me to know how to do group combat. Hooray! I'll think about how to rp my character online, I have some LARP background. Well okay, a lot. :)

See you at the Prancing Pony!
