"Oi!"  can have different meanings, depending on the situation, as well as the inflection the speaker uses.  Is that correct?  Kinda like "aloha?"  (I am an anglophile, but USA from day one.)

I believe in the context of a craggy ol' dwarf  it means "Somebody here owes me a pint!"

I generally use it when the guy in formation next to me bangs my shin with his spear. In fact, I used it today! Which would also explain the "Hmmph."
